Akito is the head of the Sohma clan. Akito is very frail and has poor health.
He often runs fevers and rarely walks out of the main house other than to greet some of the
Zodiac members, such as Yuki and Shigure, that live in the outside world.
Akito has a definite mean streak and has physically and emotionally scarred many members of the Sohma family, but Akito's rule in the Sohma clan is absolute, and none dare oppose him. While Akito isn't cursed by any of the vengeful spirits (mononoke) of the Zodiac, Akito has been revealed (Volume 11) as playing the role of the Jade Emperor (God) from the stories about the origins of the Chinese Zodiac.
A possible part of Akito's curse was that Akito would only live to be 30 years old. Obsessive and somewhat mad. At a certain point in the Zodiac's life, Akito wishes to force them to live within the Sohma compound with him for the rest of their lives in a never-ending "banquet". He even describes himself as the "Master of Their (the Zodiac) Souls". He also has a definite hatred for Kyo Sohma, the Cat, who he believes should be isolated for the rest of his life.
It is only after assurance from Shigure that Tohru can be trusted with the family secret that she is allowed to stay. Akito has no choice but to order Tohru's memory erased should she fail to uphold her end of the bargain. Most of the Sohma family is afraid of Akito and will follow his orders no matter what their personal feelings may be.
Akito is a cruel person who doesn't care for anyone else. He gets sick very often and is watched over by Hatori Sohma, who is a doctor for the family. The cause of his sickness comes from the fact that he won't live past the age of thirty. He is the head of the house is the person who takes the whole weight of the family. In effect, it puts a lot of pressure on him. He does not turn into any animals.
In the manga, it is eventually revealed that Akito is actually female.

take your pick, Haru
"Come in."In other words, I want Hatsuharu to take the side of Isuzu-san. I like him to be involved in this argument somehow.
"Akito-sama. I- I heard that you wanted to see me." I should ask Isuzu's dearest friend.
"Hatsuharu, have you seen Isuzu-san? I was wondering what they're up to."
"Of all the people, why would you ask me that question?"
"You see, both Isuzu seem to be occupied rather together with Hiro-kun. I just wanted to ask you to look out for both of them. They might get themselves in trouble. I heard that they want to, should I say, hurt Tohru-kun. I want you to prevent this from happening. However, this is only a rumor -- a dangerous rumor. The Sohmas are already having a hard time. If the bunch at Shigure hears about this rumor, they might do something terrible to Hiro and Isuzu."
"Aren't we jumping to conclusions? This is crazy. I mean, shouldn't we suppose to find out what they're doing?" asked Haru.Don't you see Hatsuharu, Tohru-kun's hurting Isuzu-san in the process of leeching the Sohma Wealth. Isuzu-san is so concerned about her family. And I quite understand that an outsider abusing the Sohma's wealth is downright unacceptable.
"You want to protect Isuzu-san from getting hurt again, don't you, Haru-san?" Hatsuharu left the room, quiet.

losing my edge
I wanted to talk to Isuzu and Hiro. I ordered Kureno to look for them. Unfortunately, he came back empty handed.
Honestly, I want to ask them why it's taking so long. What the hell are they waiting for? Is it so hard to wreak havoc on that stupid Tohru? It's easy for me to say, since no Sohma can mess with me. I should probably give them more time -- since they're all weaklings doing their humble work bit by bit."Sumi masen, Akito-sama. I went to Kagura's house and her mom said that Isuzu wasn't home. Hiro didn't come to school as well and he's not home either. I'll seek for them tomorrow, if it's okay."
"Don't worry, it's no problem."
I'm not saying I'm cooperating with them. Their plans are too mediocre and totally parallel with mine. I have my own, which I am itching to do as quickly as possible, and they can have their petty revolution. It's just a matter of taking sides.

whatever and ever
It's quiet inside my room. I'm getting stoned. I am confined inside my prison for almost a week now. Everytime I wake up, I see the same ceiling. I see the exact pictures on my wall. I hear the same birds outside. I feel the same cold. I'm tired, but I don't want to lay down. It's ironic. I could sleep on my old futon, however it won't rejuvinate my dying frame.
Kureno entered my room. Due to my curiousity and helplessness, I might as well talk to him. Even if I don't want to mingle, given the circumstance, I'm left with no choice.
I just wanted to ask him about Tohru. It's because from the highest Sohma point of view, Kureno-san acts like Tohru. He's also as clumsy as Tohru. I wonder what will happen if the two of them get the chance to meet. Such comedy it would be."Tell me, Kureno. What do you think of Honda, Tohru?" he placed a cup of tea on the table and looked at me.
"Tohru? I- I really don't know. I think she's kawaii. I hardly know her, gomen nasai."
"Really?" Well, there's no sense continuing this conversation. "Sorry to bother you. Thanks for the tea."
"Dozo."
"By the way, Akito-sama. It seems that Isuzu-san and Hiro-san are getting along very well. I frequently see them talking, more like huddling, with each other."That reminds me, I'm getting excited of whatever they're planning. I can't wait to see somebody get hurt.
